Seized Cars

Twice a year (not including repeats) I am blessed with watching and hearing the Barrett-Jackson auction resounding throughout my house. My husband sits primed, ready with his ice tea and remote as the first car is ready to be placed on the auction block. For days, I watch him sit and oh and ah, over his dream cars that he will never be able to afford. Occasionally, I will hear “Hon, you have got to come see this car” or “Hon, you will not believe how much such and such a car sold for”. However, for the most part just as I have learned to deal with not having a husband as long as the auction is on, he has learned that I just really do not care about these cars that are selling for more than my house is worth.

The Barrett-Jackson Auction is held twice a year, once in Scottsdale Arizona and the other in Palm Beach Florida. At the first auction that held in 1971, Barrett's Mercedes 770 Phaeton sold for $153,000. The first televised auction was in 1997 on Speedvision. This was also the year that began internet bidding on the cars. In 2002, Palm Beach became the second location to host the Barrett-Jackson Auction.

The Barrett-Jackson Auction is not an organization without a heart. In 2007, the auction raised over $4 million dollars for charity. ChildHelp, The Fisher House, The Carroll Shelby's Children's Foundation, the Darrell Gwynn Foundation, and The Juvenile Diabetes research Foundation are just a few of the charities that have benefited from the Barrett-Jackson Auction in Scottsdale. At the Palm Beach auction, nearly $800,000 was raised for charities.

In 2007 at the Scottsdale location the top selling car was the 1966 Shelby Cobra 427 “Carroll Shelby's Personal Supersnake” that sold for $5,500,000. Two cars tied for second place bringing in $1,100,000 each were the 1954 Dodge Firearrow II Convertible Concept Car and the 1954 Dodge Firearrow IV Convertible Concept Car.

The Barrett-Jackson Auction is not just for car buyers. There are over 350 vendors that can accommodate anything you may be looking. Whether it is a part to finish your hotrod or a shirt to commemorate you being there, you are certain to find what you are looking for.

You can visit www.Barrett-Jackson.com for a calendar of events or for more information on visiting the Barrett-Jackson Auctions as a spectator or as a bidder. Discount tickets are available to purchase online before the scheduled events.

Cars Auctions

You are about to go to your first car auction. You can feel the excitement in the air. There are so many different cars to choose from. But do you really know what to expect at a car auction? Do you know the legalities that occur? Many people find that they get in way over there heads. If this is your first car auction, it is best you come prepared.

There are a lot of things you need to do and a lot of things you need to pay attention to. First off, before you go, make sure you have enough money in your bank account. All cars purchased at a car auction must be paid in full. You also need to bring your drivers license and any other form of ID. This is needed to buy the vehicle and to do the title work and registration.

When you first get to the car auction you should always make notes of the cars you are interested in. Then, if you can, go to kellybluebook.com and check the retail value of all of the vehicles you are considering for purchase. This way you know what to start out with when you make your bid. You also need to keep in mind that many vehicles have a reserve price. This means that the vehicle has a minimum price to be sold at. If it is too high, then do not bid on it. Be sure when you do bid that you do not get into a bidding war with other bidders. Never bid more than you can afford. If the bidding war begins, just walk away from it. Oftentimes, it is every man for himself.

Before you even begin to bid on cars, you need to see if the vehicle is truly a good buy or not. Many vehicles at a car auction could have been previously damaged. An example of this is in Texas and Louisiana many cars were severely damaged by flooding due to hurricanes. These vehicles were sent to a car auction and the buyers more than likely had no idea the vehicles had flood damage. You may also wish to take a mechanic to the car auction. A mechanic is an excellent idea at a car auction. This is because they can see where someone may have tried to hide repairs and damage that the vehicle might have incurred. Lastly, you can get a free Carfax vehicle history report on the vehicle if you obtain the vehicles identification number (VIN).

Always remember, at a car auction vehicles are sold “as is” and they do not come with a warranty. Be sure to keep all of these tips in mind to protect yourself from a bad purchase and a bad decision. You are supposed to go to a car auction to get a great deal on a car and to save money. With the proper frame of mind, this can be easily accomplished.

Seized Cars

Buying a used car can be a good way to save money on a vehicle. Although, if you're not wise about purchasing a used car, it could cost you a lot more money in the long run. There are a lot of ways to go about buying a used car. You could buy a used car from a dealership, a used car superstore, an auction, or the previous owner. Each option has it's pros and cons. Some are riskier than others, but will save you more money, and vise versa.

Auto Auctions: If you're really trying to save as much money as possible, auctions are the way to do it. You've probably seen ads for auctions before. Auto auctions usually sell reposed vehicles, used cars, old government vehicles, and vintage fixer-uppers. The ultimate benefit to buying a car from an auction, is that you'll save a ton of money. I have a buddy who picked up a refurbished police car for $800.00 from an auction! However, the biggest downside to buying from an auction, is once the car is your's, it's yours, period. What you SEE is what you get, and I mean that literally. When you're at an auction, you get to see the car, and then place a bid. You don't get to take it for a test drive, or have it inspected; you just look at it, bid on it, and it's yours. If the car breaks a week later, you're stuck with it.

Dealerships: Going to a used car dealership is a little bit safer of an option than buying a car from an auction, but you're going to spend more money. Most used car dealerships, especially used car super centers, like Carmax, have there cars inspected. So, you at least know the car isn't a total junker. However, you will have to deal with a salesperson, and you can expect to spend more money. If you're dealing with a salesperson who is working on commission, it can work for or against you. On the bright side, you will be able to haggle over the price; however, on the downside, the salesperson might talk you into buying a lemon just to make the sale.

Previous Owner: Purchasing a used car directly from the previous owner can be the safest way to buy a used car if you're smart about how you do it, and you're a good haggler. The only downsides to buying a car from the previous owner, is that it may take you a long time to find a car you want, and you can't always take their word on the car's condition. It's not like you can just show up and browse through a selection. If you find a person who is selling a car that you want, there are some precautions you can take to make sure its good. First, you can go online and run a background check on the vehicle via Carfax.com. Second, you could talk the owner into taking the car to your mechanic for an inspection before you buy it. Simply tell them that you are very interested in buying the car, but you would like to have it inspected by your mechanic before you buy it. The owner may not want you to have it looked at by your mechanic, out of fear that you will use this as a bargaining chip. In this case, offer to take it to a neutral, third-party mechanic. If they accept, pay a random auto shop to run a diagnostic on the car. If the car is in decent shape, you're in the clear. If the car doesn't check out, you've just saved yourself from a huge headache.

Before you buy a used car from anywhere or anyone, you should at least check it on Carfax.com. If you have bad luck with cars, don't know anything about mechanics, don't know any mechanics, and are bad at negotiating; I would not suggest buying a used car. You're better off going to a dealership and buying a new car that you can afford. At least this way you will have a warranty on the car for a year or so.

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Money problems and marital troubles were being investigated as possible motives in a couple's murder-suicide and the critical wounding of their 3-year-old son, police said.

The boy, who hid behind a trash can in the backyard for more than 12 hours before he was rescued Monday, remained in critical but stable condition, recovering from at least three bullet wounds to his hip, shoulder and torso, Sgt. Rick Martinez said,

The boy's father, Wayne Zickefoose, 51, shot his 39-year-old wife Herminia Zickefoose Sunday night and tried to kill his two sons, police said. The 3-year-old was trapped in a corner of the backyard. A shot aimed at his 5-year-old brother missed. The boy was inside the house, and the shot was fired through an open doorway, Martinez said.

The family had money troubles and their home was in foreclosure, police said.

The home was purchased in 2001 with help from a loan backed by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, according to records obtained by The Orange County Register.

In 2007, the couple borrowed $462,000 from Countrywide Home Loans and began missing mortgage payments on that loan last year. The bank sent a notice in March that the home could be sold at public auction on April 1. At the time, interest and other charges added to the main loan had pushed the debt on the mortgage to nearly $500,000, the newspaper reported.

Civil court records also show that a woman identified in one case as Hermie G. Zickefoose and in another as Herminia Zickefoose had amassed more than $26,000 in debt on four credit cards, according to the Register.

The shooting was discovered Monday when a co-worker of Wayne Zickefoose stopped by because he had failed to show up for work at an auto body shop.

The 5-year-old boy came to the door and told the co-worker his parents had been shot. The co-worker's wife, who was waiting in a car, called 911, Martinez said.
